December 25, 2009, Newsletter Issue #11: Swine Flu Epidemic

Tip of the Week

Over the last couple weeks, the big story in the news has been the Swine flu outbreak in Mexico, which has made an appearance in the U.S. While it’s natural to become nervous and worried over a situation like this, it’s important to keep in mind that this flu isn’t much different from influenza. Every year people die from the flu, but we usually don’t hear these statistics. Whether the flu or Swine flu is infecting people, it’s always important to keep up your immunity. For example, eat a balanced diet (avoid sugars), get at least 8 hours of sleep, drink plenty of water, keep your distance from sick people and remember to wash your hands before touching your face or mouth. Simple habits such as these can keep your body’s defenses up and decrease your chances of becoming sick. However, if you do get the Swine flu, see your doctor immediately, because the same medications that treat influenza can be used.
